Some of the international migration that Turkey has received in the last four decades has come from sub-Saharan Africa. This book presents ten chapters on the different facets of this African migration, with an introduction that explores the conceptual framework, theoretical and political dimensions of international migration studies. These studies share a common methodological focus on participant observation and face-to-face communication, as well as a particular attention to global developments and linkages. Disciplines represented in the book include sociology, anthropology, psychology, media and cultural studies, economics, history of religions, and law. The emphasis on hitherto unexplored social and cultural aspects of migrants’ lives, lifestyles and occupations, the visual material offered with the texts, and, at the end, an ethnographic photo album documenting the fifteen-year presence of African migrants in Turkey make this book unique and pioneering in migration studies in Turkey.
🇹🇷 Turkey’s Emerging Role as a Migration Hub
With Turkey’s rising geopolitical and economic influence, it has become a strategic migration hub between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. This book explains how African migrants perceive Turkey — not only as a stepping stone but increasingly as a destination itself.
